Joshua Butterfield 
as 
Director of Secondary Education

Castro Valley, CA – (June 10, 2026) – The Castro Valley Unified School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Joshua Butterfield as the Director of Secondary Education, approved by the Board of Trustees on June 10, 2026.

Mr. Butterfield has joined CVUSD with a strong background in district-level leadership, having previously served as the Director of Secondary Education for Pleasanton Unified School District. There, he launched the CSU Direct Admissions Program and increased Dual Enrollment opportunities, significantly enhancing student access to higher education.

He played a crucial role in implementing an Ethnic Studies graduation requirement and adopting new math curricula, while also improving the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). Additionally, Mr. Butterfield managed accountability programs and led initiatives for Educational Equity, demonstrating his commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.

Mr. Butterfield earned his Bachelor of Music Education from CSU, Stanislaus, and his Administrative Credential and Master of Arts from Brandman University.
