As we complete our fourth week of school, students and staff are settling into routines, strengthening relationships, and building momentum for the year ahead. Across CVUSD, classrooms and campuses are filled with learning, creativity, collaboration, and connection.

Creekside and CVHS Welcome Families Back to School
Creekside Middle School and Castro Valley High School recently welcomed families to campus for Back-to-School Night. Families had the opportunity to meet teachers and staff, visit classrooms, and learn more about the programs, expectations, and opportunities available to students this year.
At CVHS, performances by Drumline, Madrigals, Cheer, and Dance brought additional energy and Trojan spirit to the evening. Thank you to the students, staff, families, and community partners who helped make both events welcoming, informative, and engaging. These gatherings strengthen the important partnership between home and school and help set the stage for a successful year.

Celebrating Community, Culture, and Connection
On August 21, CVUSD hosted a Black/African American/African Family Gathering, bringing students, families, staff, and community members together to connect, build relationships, and begin the new school year in community.
The gathering provided an opportunity for families to meet one another, learn more about available resources and opportunities, and strengthen connections with CVUSD staff. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped create such a welcoming and meaningful evening.
Events like this reflect CVUSD’s commitment to ensuring that every student and family feels seen, valued, supported, and connected.

CVUSD Celebrates the Linguistic Wealth of Our Students
The Board received an update on the programs and services supporting CVUSD’s multilingual learners. The district currently serves 1,081 multilingual learners who collectively speak 40 different languages.
This year, CVUSD will continue strengthening designated English Language Development, culturally and linguistically responsive instruction, student-progress monitoring, and family participation through school and district English Learner Advisory Committees.
The presentation also highlighted continued progress toward English proficiency. This fall, 204 students may be eligible for reclassification after meeting all required criteria. CVUSD remains committed to ensuring that multilingual learners feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed.

Financial Stewardship: Reducing Future Borrowing Costs
The Board approved documents authorizing the district to refinance a portion of CVUSD’s outstanding general obligation bonds if market conditions allow the transaction to meet the required savings threshold. Similar to refinancing a mortgage when market conditions are favorable, bond refunding may allow the district to reduce future debt-service costs for local taxpayers.

Board Selects ELOP Providers for Contract Negotiations
Following a competitive Request for Proposals process, the CVUSD Board of Education approved the selection of AlphaBEST Education and YMCA of the East Bay and authorized staff to begin contract negotiations.
ELOP provides state-funded before-school, after-school, summer, and intersession programming for students in transitional kindergarten through sixth grade. Programs extend learning beyond the classroom through enrichment, recreation, academic support, and opportunities for students to explore their interests.
CVUSD received 18 proposals and conducted a comprehensive review that considered program quality, student services, family communication, staff training and professional development, organizational leadership, and alignment with the District’s ELOP goals.
There is no immediate change to current ELOP services. PlayCV will continue operating the program through December 2026. The District anticipates transitioning to the new providers when students return from winter break in January 2027, contingent upon successful contract negotiations with final Board approval.
